The Three Rs

The three Rs are basic skills taught in school reading, writing and arithmetic.

  • Reading: is the complex cognitive process of decoding symbols to derive meaning. It is a form of language processing. Reading is  means for language acquisition, communication and sharing information and ideas. Like all languages, it is a complex interaction between text and reading, shaped by prior knowledge, experience, attitude and language community which is culturally and socially situated.
  • Writing: is medium of human communication that represents language with signs and symbols for language that utilize a writing system, inscriptions can complement spoken language by creating a durable version of speech that can be stored for future reference or transmitted across distance. In another words, writing is not a language, but a tool used to make languages readable. Writing relies on many structures of speech such as vocabulary, grammar and semantics.
  • Arithmetic: is a branch of mathematics that consists of the study of numbers, especially the properties of the traditional operations on them_ addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Arithmetic is an elementary part of number theory and number theory is considered to be one of the top_ level divisions of modern mathematics along with algebra, geometry and analysis.
